Hello there, my skincare-savvy friends! Today, let’s talk about how to logically layer skincare products.
One question that often comes up is whether you can mix skincare products, such as serums. The answer is yes, you can, but there’s a right way to do it.
You don’t want to mix them in your hands and then apply them to your face. Instead, layer them one after the other with a short wait in between to let them absorb. For example, if you’re using a hydrating serum and an antioxidant serum, apply the hydrating serum first, then the antioxidant serum, followed by your moisturiser and sunscreen.
But how do you know which products to use and when? It depends on your skin type and concerns. Are you a beginner, intermediate, or advanced user? If you’re a beginner, start with the basics, such as sunscreen and a gentle cleanser. If you’re an intermediate user, you may be using 1-2 products in the morning and evening. And if you’re an advanced user, you may be layering multiple products and reading labels.
If you have oily skin, keep your serums light or even drying, and skip the moisturiser during the day. Use a mineral sunscreen formulated for acne-prone skin and consider using mineral foundation. If you have prescription acne products, apply them right after cleansing and wait 5 minutes before applying other products.
If you have dry skin, layer hydrating serums first, and consider double moisturising. Look for moisturiser’s that contain natural lipids or are marketed as barrier creams. Don’t over-exfoliate, especially if you’re using a retinoid – you want to protect your skin’s barrier layer to prevent transepidermal water loss.
